What’s the Best Brush for Maine Coon? My Top 4 Picks Revealed!

If you’re reading this, you clearly understand the magic (and madness) that comes with owning a Maine Coon. I’m certainly acquainted with all of that.

My boy Leo is a 17-pound, amber-eyed, bushy-tailed tornado of fluff, and his coat is as wild as his personality.

But before I discovered the best brush for Maine Coon, grooming him was a desperate daily struggle that left both of us frustrated and, honestly, a little devastated.

I want to take you through my journey of missteps, revelations, and the one brush that changed it all because every Maine Coon (and every cat parent) deserves to relish the beauty of those luscious manes, not dread it.

Why Is Brushing a Maine Coon So Emotional?

I’ll never forget the first time Leo developed a mat behind his ear. I felt like I had let him down. It hurt to see him look at me with those big, betrayed eyes, knowing he trusted me, and I was working a painful knot out of his fur.

Maine Coons are gentle giants, but their coats are not easy-care. Their fur easily tangles, particularly at the armpits and bellies, which are hidden under their large bodies.

The need for regular brushing of a Maine Coon is primarily due to their long, thick, and dense fur, which is prone to matting and tangling if neglected.

What Brushes Did I Try – And Why Did They Fail?

Plastic Slicker Brushes:

I first tried the cheap plastic slicker brush you can buy at the pet shop. It scratched Leo’s sensitive skin, and he’d run from it.

I found out the hard way that all brushes are not created equal, and Maine Coons need something gentler and that works.

Deshedding Tools:

Next, I tried the famous deshedding tool. I have to admit, there was some satisfaction in watching all of that fur come out of Leo’s coat, but I quickly noticed that the coat looked thin and uneven.

I realized quickly that deshedding tools can strip too much undercoat out, leaving Maine Coons open to the chills of the cold winter, or worse, sunburn if they were indoor-outdoor cats!

Rubber Grooming Mittens:

I wanted grooming to be like petting, so I used a rubber grooming mitt. Leo liked it, but it did almost nothing for the undercoat. Matting was still happening, and I felt like I was going to lose my battle against matting.

What Finally Worked For Me?

After four months of trial and error (and more than a few tears), I discovered a rotating tooth metal comb.

This comb is different from a standard comb because instead of having fixed teeth, the teeth rotate freely as they travel through the fur, gliding over tangles rather than ripping through them.

The first time I used it, Leo purred. He was leaning in, eyes half-closed, and all of a sudden, grooming felt like a bonding experience, rather than a battleground.
