Owning a Maine Coon means knowing that these gentle giants come with a mane as royal as a lion and a personality to match.

However, underneath all that glorious fur lies the grooming routine that makes or breaks the health and happiness of your beloved cat.

But have you ever wondered how often you should brush your Maine Coon to keep that magnificent coat healthy and mat-free?

In my experience, brushing your Maine Coon 2-3 times per week for 10-15 minutes per session. This keeps their coat tangle-free, reduces shedding, and prevents hairballs.

Let’s explore the facts, some personal experience, and some expert advice to transform brushing your Maine Coons from a household chore to a glorious time together.

Why Grooming Your Maine Coon is Important

Maine Coons have a double coated coat with soft insulating under-fur and a top layer of longer, water-resistant fur. Their beautiful fur helps them survive in harsh winter conditions, but it also makes them more susceptible to tangles and mats than short-haired cats.

Regular grooming means looks aren’t the only factor; comfort and health are also involved. Mats can be painful and can lead to skin conditions.

When I first adopted my Maine Coon I was amazed at the amount and beauty of her fur, but I quickly realized that mats would start to form if I didn’t brush her on a regular basis, particularly around her belly and behind her ears.

I started brushing her about twice a week, and it made a big difference. Not only was her coat shinier and softer, but she also appeared more relaxed and happy. It became our time together to bond and to check in on her health.

How Often Do I Brush My Maine Coon?

From my experience, brushing 2-3 times a week was effective. Each brushing session took about 10-15 minutes, which was available time even on the busiest of days. On days when she heavily sheds, particularly with the seasonal change, I brush every day or every other day to prevent tangles and reduce hairballs.

I found that if I skip brushing for more than a week, it leads to stubborn mats that are more difficult to remove. Consistency is key!

“We try to Netflix and chill, and brush our cats at least a few times a week. It might seem overwhelming, but it usually takes about 15 minutes to brush. With some patience, and perseverance, our Maine Coons have learned to love getting brushed!

How Grooming Helps

  • Prevents mats and tangles
  • Reduces shedding and hairballs
  • Promotes skin and coat health
  • Strengthens your bond with your cat
  • Early detection of skin issues or parasites

How I Groom My Maine Coon: My Basic Process

The best practice is to start young. Kittens introduced to grooming early are more likely to enjoy it as adults. Let them sniff and explore the brush before you begin.

Tools at the ready: I have a slicker brush I use for her topcoat, an undercoat rake to use on the undercoat where it is dense, and a fine-toothed metal comb for any tangles.

Start slowly: I start by stroking her back towards the direction of hair growth.

Focus on trouble spots: I pay special attention to her belly, behind the ears, and under the legs because those are some of the areas mats like to hide.

Comb carefully: If I find a tangle, I work on it slowly with the metal comb while feeding her a few treats to keep her relaxed.

Short grooming sessions: When she starts to wiggle, I stop and try later, instead of trying to force it.

Bath occasionally: About once a month, I bathe her with cat shampoo, so her coat stays fresh and healthy.

What I Have Learned About Tools and Techniques

Initially, I figured a brush is a brush, but then I learned that it is quite important to make sure you have the proper tools. The slicker brush is great for removing loose hair and dirt, but it is the metal comb that really makes a difference in detangling.

I keep a comb in every room where she likes to hang out, so I can do quick touch-ups.

I also found that sometimes brushing or combing against the grain can help loosen mats, but I am always very gentle so that I am not hurting her.

There were times when my Maine Coon didn’t want to be brushed. I learned to be patient, using treats and soft words to win her over. Sometimes, I’d stop mid-session and try again later, which helped build her trust.

I once faced a stubborn mat behind the ear that I couldn’t comb through. I carefully cut the mat off with scissors. However, since then, I have been even more vigilant to avoid mats developing.
